OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Customized care for your needs

With a unique focus on adapting environments, tools and ways of doing things, occupational therapy supports people with all levels of ability to engage in the things that are important to them.
From the basics of day-to-day living to participating in social interactions, from enjoying leisure activities to performing at work, occupational therapists (OTs) consider a person’s physical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning to help them achieve their goals. This wholistic lens comes with a client-centered approach, where the client determines the treatment goal and is an equal member of the rehabilitation team. Our occupational therapists offer evidence-based, trauma-informed interventions. Our Occupational Therapy services focus on:
Upper extremity therapy, which provides assessment & treatment of other upper extremity conditions that may affect the hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder. Visit our Upper Extremity Clinic page for more information.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Concussion Care, emphasizing managing symptoms and adapting activities to enhance participation in meaningful tasks. This involves creating strategies to address physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory symptoms, and modifying daily activities in all areas (personal care, productivity, and leisure) to optimize function and satisfaction. Visit our Post-Concussion Management and Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation page for more information. Services provided by our OT include:
-
Education for clients, families, and communities
-
Non-pharmacological pain and fatigue management strategies
-
Cognitive rehabilitation to improve cognitive functioning and build tolerances for cognitively demanding tasks.
-
Psychosocial and mental health support
-
Sleep hygiene education.
-
Gradual return to school, work, leisure, and social activities, including accommodations and modified duties when necessary.
-
Prescription of equipment/devices and adaptations to the physical environment to promote independence
Pain Management, playing a unique role in comprehensive integrative pain management programs by focusing on functional aspects of daily life. This includes personal care, productivity (such as meal preparation, shopping, childcare, working, or volunteering), and leisure activities. Using evidence-based interventions, occupational therapists adopt a holistic approach to assess physical, physiological, psychological, cognitive, environmental, and personal factors influencing pain. This information is used to implement self-management strategies, functional activities, and specific recommendations and adaptations to enhance function and participation.
We consistently communicate and collaborate with the other health professionals involved in your care and as long as you consent, we keep your family doctor informed of any findings, progress, or treatment recommendations.
If we feel you will be better treated or diagnosed by a different healthcare professional, we will not hesitate to refer you to ensure you receive the most appropriate care.
A referral from a physician is not necessary, however you may want to check with your private insurer to see if they require a physician's referral for reimbursement.
